The Lighthouse Gallery

I love the diversity of art and the diversity of lighthouses and their history have always attracted me.

GREAT LAKES LIGHTHOUSES- Watercolor Series
Lighthouses on the western coast of Lake Michigan all come with a storied past, saving countless lives, protecting shipping and even helping to protect land assets. Painting some of these great lighthouses was always interesting for me to do. With my expertise in rendering architecture, I enjoyed trying to include some historical aspects of the structures.

The architecture of the lighthouses all seem to naturally blend in with the area where they were built.  Was that by chance or did the architects going back 200 years know exactly what they were doing?  Sometimes nature overtook the lights.  Plants grow and trees get large.  Such was the case with the North Point Lighthouse in Milwaukee.  Even though it was constructed in stages, getting higher and higher, trees still blocked the light at certain angles and the light is no longer functioning.

Other lighthouses along the coast of Lake Michigan were built on jettys or at the end of the piers or breakwater points.  These still function well , though many have become automated with modern technology.  We have a large selection of lighthouse watercolors and can forward examples to interested parties.
